Unusual Facts about the Human Body

UNUSUAL FACTS ABOUT THE HUMAN BODY

  • Don't stick out your tongue if you want to hide your identity! Similar to fingerprints, everyone also has a unique tongue print!
  • Your pet isn't the only one in the house with a shedding problem...humans shed about 600,000 particles of skin every hour! That works out to be about 1.5 pounds per year and around 105 pounds of skin by age 70!
  • An adult has fewer bones than a baby. We start our lives with 350 bones, but because bones fuse together during growth, we end up with only 206 as adults.
  • Did you know that you get a new stomach lining every 3-4 days? If you didn't, the strong acids your stomach uses to digest food would also digest your stomach.
  • Your nose is not a sensitive as a dog's, but it CAN remember up to 50,000 different scents!
  • The small intestine is about 4 times as long as the average adult is tall. If it weren't looped back and forth upon itself, its length of 18-23 feet wouldn't fit into the abdominal cavity...making things rather messy.
  • This will really make your skin crawl: Every square inch of skin on the human body has about 32 million bacteria on it, but fortunately, the vast majority of them are harmless.
  • The source of smelly feet, like smelly armpits, is sweat. And people sweat buckets from their feet! A pair of feet have 500,000 sweat glands and can produce more than a pint of sweat a day!

Tiny Teeth

Unlike your heart or brain, your teeth weren't ready to work from the day your were born. Although babies have the beginnings of their first teeth even before they were born, teeth don't become visible until babies are about 6-12 months old.

After that first tooth breaks through, more and more teeth begin to appear. Most kids have their first set of teeth by the time they are 3 years old. These are called primary or baby teeth, and there are 20 in all. When a child gets to age 5 or 6, these teeth start falling out, one by one. A baby tooth falls out because it is being pushed out of the way by the permanent tooth that is behind it.

Around age 7 or 8, most kids have at least 4 adult teeth. It is at this time that the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that children should be screened by an orthodontic specialist for potential early treatment. The goal of this type of treatment is to reverse potential problems such as severe crowding, overbites/underbites, and to avoid impacted teeth. It is also important to continue to monitor the eruption pattern of developing teeth as well as the proper timing for comprehensive orthodontic treatment which often occurs around age 10 or 11.

Early interceptive treatment often makes comprehensive orthodontic care easier, shorter, and less expensive. If you suspect your child may benefit from early orthodontic treatment, please contact our office for a complimentary screening. We would love to hear from you!
